Danish progressive metal band Anubis Gate released their fifth album this year. The self-titled album is their first without Jacob Hansen on vocals, and features vocals by bassist Henrik Fevre. I confess I was not an Anubis Gate fan going into this album. My previous exposure to the band was their 2004 debut Purification, and it just didn't do anything for me. It certainly left me unprepared for the brilliance the band has unleashed with this new album.

It's rare to find a progressive metal band that fully satisfies both on a technical level as well as a melodic level. The overly technical bands tend to be less accessible, and the melody-focused bands never seem to have quite the same technical chops. Anubis Gate satisfies completely on both levels with this album. On a technical level, this is an album full of astonishing layers of musicianship that each spin further illustrates. It's more than just intricate solos (though there is plenty of that). The rhythms are as complex as they are compelling, and the drumming is just mesmerizing. Fevre's vocals are also noteworthy. I found Hansen's vocals a bit more suited to the power metal style, but Fevre just seems to fit the progressive nature and overall tone and atmosphere of the album. Anubis Gate keeps things melodic and accessible enough that the casual progressive metal fan can latch onto the songs. Actually, it's the songs that latch onto the listener, grabbing you right from the start so that you want to hear more and further explore what the album has to offer.

Listing highlights is almost pointless when the whole album is as good as this one. It works as well as a cohesive whole as it does a collection of individual songs. "World in a Dome" and "Circumstanced" deserve special mention as the album's longest songs, coming in at eight and nine minutes, respectively, but they're no less effective than the 4-5 minute tracks.

After hearing this amazing album, I have to say I'm now an Anubus Gate fan. It's just an incredible work of progressive metal that just about any fan of the genre should own. In any other year, it would be the progressive metal album of the year, but 2011 has seen some truly remarkable releases. It's definitely in the top five, keeping company with Leprous's Bilateral, Voyager's The Meaning of I, Arch/Matheos's Sympathetic Resonance and Symphony X's Iconoclast.
