He co-founded the punk band The Saints 197378, the experimental post-punk group Laughing Clowns 197985 and the grunge-like The Aints 199194, 2017present. He has also recorded over a dozen albums as a solo artist using a variety of backing bands. His highest charting solo album, Honey Steel's Gold, appeared in November 1991 and reached No. 28 on the ARIA Albums Chart. His other top 50. After a 7 year hiatus, Kuepper's 17th solo studio album Jean Lee And The Yellow Dog, a concept album about Jean Lee, the last woman hanged in Australia, was released to critical acclaim in 2007. In early 2009 Ed Kuepper played in reformed original versions of The Saints and reformed Laughing Clowns to play at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival curated by Nick Cave.
