Featuring members of Soundgarden and what would soon become Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog's lone eponymous album might never have reached a wide audience if not for Pearl Jam's breakout success a year later. In turn, by providing the first glimpse of Chris Cornell's more straightforward, classic rock-influenced side, Temple of the Dog helped set the stage for Soundgarden's mainstream breakthrough with Superunknown. Temple of the Dog begins with a cassette containing two songs spawned by the loss of Chris Cornells friend and roommate Andrew Wood singer of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. Wood had huge talent, but human beings are complicated, and he struggled with cocaine and heroin, sending him to rehab in 1989. In March 1990, Wood relapsed and died at 24. It was, Cornell would say, the death of the innocence of the scene. Cornell was devastated. Chris and Andy had a very deep relationship, Soundgardens Matt Cameron observed. Watch Temple of the Dog's 'Hunger Strike' Video. The idea was mainly to do a single as opposed to a whole record, he told Reflex in 1991. And the thing was, the rest of the guys in Temple, they sort of thought maybe we should make it a little bit longer project, like an EP or something. The more we talked about it, the more songs kept flying out, and it ended up being an album. It didn't feel like a morose project. It felt sort of celebratory. After approaching Gossard and Ament, Cornell enlisted Soundgarden. For a brief spell yesterday morning, social media was in a state of excitement over a band we hadnt really heard from in a quarter-century: Temple of the Dog. A one-off project formed in 1990 featuring members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, the bands sole album was released in 1991 and became a big hit the following year, but aside from a few casual reunions between the longtime friends over the years, the band never actually toured before. That will change in November, as Temple of the Dog will reunite to play headlining shows in Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattl
